Wooster Community Hospital Courtyard Mural

Honored to have been chosen for this project. What Wooster Community Hospital social wrote about it: "And now, with the installation of a 42-foot original mural by local artist Evelia Sowash celebrating the theme of “community,” staff, patients and visitors can also engage with a truly unique work of art. After all, art not only sparks curiosity and contemplation; it creates a calming environment by lowering stress hormones and raising serotonin levels. (Folks exposed to art during a hospital stay tend to heal faster and enjoy a better overall patient experience.

Last year, I was chosen to create a 42-foot mural! Located at the multi-year winner of 100 Top Hospitals, Wooster Community Hospital in Wooster, Ohio. Installation is complete in their outdoor courtyard.

Narrative describing the design concept:

I created this artwork in the style of French artist Henri Matisse. His use of color and shapes is a bit whimsical and conveys a positive, uplifting feeling. I combined this style with compositions from illustrations published in the "Highlights For Children" magazines from the 1970s that I enjoyed as a child. I envision the viewer being surrounded by the love, energy and positivity that exists in the citizens of Wooster and Wayne County.

How it happened:

Angela Rincon, Director of Philanthropy reached out to (now) Mayor Jodie Perry for Mansfield, who connected with (then Chairman) Luke Beekman of the Mansfield Art Sector, and Angela responded really well to Artist Portfolios and the local community art projects!  The opportunity to selected artists from Mansfield was to display work in their exterior courtyard wall at WCH in 2024.
